A native of Denver, Steve first encountered the Tuba at the nearly
halfway mark of his middle school career. Fortunately, the band needed someone to play the horn and,
perhaps more fortunately, the band director was clever enough to sell the idea of the behemoth instrument
to Steve’s parents. Thus, a Tuba player was born and a new trajectory began.
Decades later, Steve(now
Tuba Steve after being given the name during his brief stint at the Lamont School of Music at the
University of Denver) has lived roughly the past decade in New Orleans. He has established himself as a
reliable and energetic player in the local scene and, as such, has been afforded numerous opportunities to
travel, perform and educate with his horn all across the world.
He can frequently be seen performing on stage with the James Martin Band,
the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, and Magnetic Ear locally and abroad or randomly in the streets of New
Orleans with the Jaywalkers parade band.
In July 2022, he was the recipient of the Individual Performance Award at
the Karel van Eerd Music Competition in Den Bosch, Netherlands.
